Sometimes the answer stands in line for a cookie.

There are moments in life that change everything. And sometimes they don’t arrive loudly. Sometimes they quietly stand in line for one of Momma’s chocolate chip cookies.

Back in 2002, my mom and I owned a little restaurant called Oso Delicioso. It was my mom’s dream, her bucket list item. She wanted nothing more than to create food “made with love.”

The thing was, my mom had been unwell for a very long time. I’ll never forget the day she called me. Deep down, I thought it might be one of the last times I would ever talk to her if I didn’t do something radical.

So I did. I rented out my house. I took out an equity line of credit. I moved back to Eugene to be with my mom. And I asked her what she wanted to do with the time and the money. Without hesitation, she said, “My bucket list.”

So we opened the restaurant. And something incredible happened: she came alive again.

I learned something during that season. Purpose matters. Passion matters. Having a reason to wake up matters.

But even in the middle of all that beauty, I knew I needed an exit strategy. My mom couldn’t sustain the pace forever, and I had been praying for some answer, some next step that could help both of us.

Three days at the fair

Then came the Oregon State Fair. We were slammed every single day. The lines for food were insane, morning until night, with no breaks at all.

And then one day, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a woman dressed in flowing white linen, gliding toward the booth like she was floating. She stood in line, bought one of Momma’s cookies, smiled at me, and asked: “Have you ever heard of quantum biofeedback?”

I said no. She said, “You should come experience a free 20-minute demo. It just might change your life.” I laughed and told her there was no possible way. As she could clearly see, I was slammed.

The next day, there she was again, floating through the crowd like a peaceful angel in the middle of chaos. Another cookie. Another question: “What if this is what you’ve been looking for?”

On the third day, I was looking for her. She got to the front of the line, smiled, and said: “Today’s the last day. What if you miss it?”

That one hit me like a loving gut punch. Because she was right. So somehow, I made time. And that’s one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in life: we make time for the things that matter.

“Don’t look at the screen”

I sat down for my first session, and the practitioner told me, “Whatever you do, don’t look at the screen.”

The very first thing I experienced when she calibrated me to the software is something I still struggle to explain. I felt my energy expand far beyond my body, as though I suddenly understood I was far more than I had ever believed myself to be.

At one point the practitioner stepped away. And of course, the second she did, I whipped my head around to look at the screen. What I saw there was something from my early childhood that no one else knew about. The color drained from my face. How could it possibly know that?

When the practitioner came back, she looked at me and said, “Oh my goodness… you looked at the screen.” I said, “Yeah. I did.” Then I asked her one question: “How much are these devices?” She told me. And I said, “Can I write you a check?”

I bought the device right then and there, and it changed the direction of my life forever.

Looking back now, I truly believe the answers to our prayers don’t always arrive the way we expect them to. Sometimes they arrive quietly, standing in line for one of Momma’s cookies.
